Keeping your site up-to-date and relevant

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) & Updating your Website

Clients ask why they should spend their hard-earned money to update their web site when it looks satisfactory to them the way it is. There are at least three good reasons.

  • First and most importantly, is to keep the attention of the search engines.
  • Second is to give repeat visitors a reason to return with something new to look at.
  • Third is to keep the site updated with the newer technology that is always coming out.
  • Fourth, your products, services, staff, contact information, or location may have changed. Your website needs to be updated.

Just like a brick-and-mortar store, visitors to your business site use a variety of means to find out your web address.

  • Printed materials
  • TV newspaper ads and stories
  • Billboards
  • Business cards
  • Yellow Page ads
  • Invoices
  • Friends and family

When they find your address with the above activities, they type your address directly into their browser (i.e. Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome) and are taken to your site.

Internet users frequently use search engines or search sites (i.e. Google, Yahoo, Bing) to find web sites. They use terms that describe what and where they want. The search engine then returns to them a list of sites and links that it thinks matches what they want. Find out about List Local - Location Services.

Popular search engines are Google, Bing, and Yahoo. Search engines run a specialized program (called robots or spiders) in the background of the Internet creating a database of web sites that match a set of criteria and/or keywords.

It takes an average of 6-8 weeks after launching your website on the Internet for the search engines to "find" your website.

Each search engine uses their own set of criteria and methods for searching the web and indexing the sites for their databases. They all use some common elements that web site designers and developers need to make sure are in the pages and sites they produce.

  • Metatags
  • Keywords
  • Content of your site
  • Correct HTML coding

These SEO (Search Engine Optimization) elements are included with Rockport Web Sites' standard service.

Keywords are one of the keys to a successful and high ranking from the search engines. Your web designer can assist you, but two things to remember:

What words would you use?

What words does your site’s text utilize?

Rockport Web Sites will make suggestions for your keywords based on your content and business.

There are tools (programs) available for you or your web designer to use that analyze visitors (traffic) to your site. The site analysis reports should discuss at least the five W’s and the H - What, Where, When, Who, Why and How.

Rockport Web Sites can provide a free visitor tracker in the bottom left corner of the home page. More robust analysis is available for an additional charge.

All businesses want return customers. Visitors returning to web sites are no different. But if there is nothing new, old out-dated information or broken links - they probably won’t be back.

Site maintenance is an important aspect of any successful web site and business. Maintenance and updates could take an hour a week or eight hours daily. Review with your designer your goals for your web site and how you can keep it fresh and welcome visitors back.

Here is a list of possible actions to keep them coming back for more!

  • New products
  • New locations
  • New personnel
  • Web specials
  • Coupons on the web for your brick-and-mortar store
  • New elements on your site
  • New photos
  • New links to other sites

Site analysis of traffic (visitors) to your web may also lead to updates or maintenance of your site.

Search engines (Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc.) state that it takes 6-8 weeks for them to fully index your site. It will not show up immediately on the results page. Rockport Web Sites submits daily (business days)  to the search engines (the most I can do) for the first 3-4 weeks. You can and do need to promote/market your site also. Publish your web address on any printed materials you have, create a signature for your emails and use the information below to extend the reach of your site.

Search engines and directories prefer the business owner 'claim' their business listing and placement on their maps. You must be able to prove you are the business owner. Your web designer cannot do this for you.

These are the sites to get started getting your site and business on the Internet map:

Google - http://www.google.com/business/

Yahoo - https://smallbusiness.yahoo.com/local-listings

Bing - https://www.bingplaces.com/

Once you have claimed your business and/or have accounts established, then I can assist if needed. Please call or email for prices.
